The Discovery: Nobody has ever commercially produced barrel-aged vetiver oil. Nobody has registered a Geographic Indication for vetiver oil. Nobody has done in-country molecular fractionation of Haitian vetiver. Haiti could own all three. This product category does not exist yet. We create it.

What Happens When Vetiver Oil Ages
Vetiver oil is dominated by sesquiterpenes and sesquiterpenoids (C15 compounds). Over 170 compounds identified by Weyerstahl et al. (2000). The key molecules:

Vetiver is one of only THREE essential oils (with patchouli and sandalwood) that are widely acknowledged to improve with aging. Shelf life with proper storage: 6–10 years. The scent at Year 5 is categorically different from — and superior to — the scent at Month 1.
The Double-Distillation Process
Step 1: Initial distillation. Standard steam distillation of roots (12–24 hours). Produces crude vetiver oil at ~$200–350/kg. This is what Haiti currently exports.
Step 2: Aging. Crude oil placed in sealed containers (stainless steel, glass, or — for the luxury tier — wood barrels). Stored in controlled conditions (dark, below 25°C) for 3–10 years. During aging, the chemical transformations above occur naturally.
Step 3: Redistillation / Rectification. The aged oil is redistilled under vacuum or at atmospheric pressure. This process:
- Removes heavier polymerized compounds (which darken the oil and add muddy notes)
- Separates the oil into fractions by boiling point
- Captures the "heart" — the middle fraction enriched in β-vetivone and khusimol
- Eliminates oxidation artifacts and "still notes" from the original distillation
- Produces a product that has the COMPLEXITY of aged oil with the CLARITY of fresh distillation
The result: A double-distilled, aged vetiver oil that literally does not exist as a commercial product anywhere on Earth.

The Haitian Mahogany Angle: Haiti's deforestation crisis left behind reclaimed mahogany. Using this wood to age vetiver oil turns a national tragedy into a luxury material. The story writes itself: "Aged in barrels made from Haiti's last mahogany. The wood that was taken from the land now transforms the oil that grows from it." No marketing firm could invent a better narrative.

When vetiver oil is fractionally distilled (by controlling temperature and vacuum), it separates into distinct fractions:

The inversion: Instead of exporting crude at $250/kg for someone else to fractionate at $3,500/kg, the cooperative does the fractionation in-country. Instead of spot-market pricing with no leverage, the GI creates a legal moat that prevents anyone from calling non-Haitian vetiver "Vétiver d'Haïti."
