The conventional response to Haiti’s charcoal crisis has been to tell people to stop using charcoal. That has never worked and will never work. Electric stoves require a grid that does not exist.

Stage 1: Harvesting

Cut mature elephant grass (4–12 months old) at 10–15 cm above ground level using machete or mechanical cutter. Leave the root crown and stubble intact... regrowth begins within days. Field-dry the cut stalks for 3–7 days to reduce moisture content below 20%. Optimal moisture at carbonization: 10–15%.
